Run & Gun Camera Gear

Sometimes video projects come along where you should only take the bare essentials to film, but in some situations your gear CAN become more of a hinderance than a help.

When it comes to my gear, My camera tends to stay the same, but its the accessories that change depending on what I’m planning to shoot. This is also the gear I took with me when I recently travelled to Ireland for a few days. As it was a plane journey, you can probably guess that I was only able to bring the bare bone essentials to film run and gun interviews and a few handheld b-roll shots.

The Main Camera

So the main meat and potatoes of my camera gear is the Sony a7s3. I love this cameras form factor. Previously I used A Sony fs7 which was great but this camera is way more versatile to use. Easy to stick it on a gimble or get those quick hand held shots at a drop of a hat, I even use it for my Photography too.

I use the a7s3 in tandem with the Atomos Ninja V. Great screen size and it can accurately show me my exposure on that nice 7 inch screen. I also use false colour all the time to help with my shots, it also gives me piece of mind having a back up of the footage recorded on the ninja too.

Audio

For audio, I use a Sony Lav system. It easily connects to the hot shoe of the camera without using any extra cables. I can just throw this on, Lav up the talent and I am good to go.

Extras

Next up ND filter. Always battling against harsh light and this thing helps keep things exposed correctly.

Another filter that stays on my lens all the time is this 1/8 pro-mist filter. I love how this makes all the highlights in my shots bloom. Plus it makes it look dare I say it... Cinematic.

iPad... I use this to tether to my camera when I taking photos. It’s nice to be able to review my shots on a bigger screen. I also like to download films and tv so I’ve got something to watch it my hotel room.

Spare batteries and a small USB charger to charge them. It can charge two batteries at a time but more importantly, its small and can fit in my back better than the regular charger.
